Bickershaw Project: Telling Tales

The Bickershaw Heritage Project: Telling Tales is all about uniting local members of the community, past and present, through shared memories, connections, and experiences. The project involves three key groups: Bickershaw C.E. Primary School; West Bickershaw Residents Association; and Hindley Prison. Together, they will be working with artists, film makers and archivists to document and explore the heritage of Bickershaw.

Telling Tales will culminate in a celebration day held at the Labour Club, during which banners made by the three groups of participants and six painted boards will be revealed. The artwork boards will be situated on the park next to the Labour Club to replace the existing artwork which has reached a bad state of repair.
The artwork will be facilitated by Lancashire artists, who will work with the three participating groups to turn their research into a visual display.

This blog is part of the research element of the project, and has been initiated to encourage community members to get together and pass on their various experiences and memories of village life and history. Although the project will mostly involve these three key groups, all community members and those with a connection to Bickershaw Village are encouraged and invited to take part by posting comments. Bickershaw Village has a diverse history, and our aim is to explore its entire rich heritage and compile this into a comprehensive research base.

The project was initiated by West Bickershaw Residents Association  in 2013 and will run until November, when the celebration day will be held. Ultimately, the research will be included in the Wigan and Leigh Archives, based at the Wigan and Leigh Museum. A DVD will also be produced. Telling Tales is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
