The band was formed in 1919 as the Abram Colliery band under the leadership of Major Ernest Hart. It had marked successes in the early 1930's and took part in over three hundred broadcasts. It was a premier band of the period and won the British Open Championship in 1940 and 1943. with William Haydock as the bandmaster. The band changed its name to the Bickershaw colliery band in 1937 when the company took over a further group of collieries. It folded in nationalisation in 1947. Harry Mortimer CBE also conducted the band and celebrated numerous successes and was regarded as the worlds best ever cornet player.. The Band won the British Open Championship in 1946 while Harry Mortimer was the conductor.
